    Hij had geen paleis

    Hij had geen rijk

    Hij zat niet op een troon

    Hij droeg geen gouden kroon

    Hij droeg geen dure Titels

    als teken van verhevenheid

    Daniel was een ster tussen de sterren
    die het licht met mens en aarde deelde

    Hij was een bloem in een woud van bomen
    een orchidee in de tuin met klavers en rozen

    Voor Daniel was elk mens, een parel,
    een schat uniek en van waarde gelijk


    Maar zijn volk had hem verstoten
    in de naam van een geloof
    omdat hij vrouwen gewadendroeg
    en zijn haren kleurde
    in de kleuren van de regenboog

    je moet dit, je moet dat,
    je moet je gedragen,
    je moet luisteren,
    je moet gehoorzamen
    je moet geloven,

    en als jij dat niet doet
    dan ben je voor ons niets waard
    dan willen wij jou niet meer zien
    dan val je maar dood neer op je snuit
    dan zoek je het zelf maar lekker uit

    Die arme lieve Daniel
    zo goed en lief hij was
    werd hij verstoten
    omdat in zichzelf geloofde

    Daniel vond een toevlucht
    in de grot der verstoten zielen
    daar hij werd omarmd gelijk als een
    om lief en leed samen liefdevol te delen

    Daar zongen en dansten de muzen
    de rijke en de arme eenzamen,
    dolenden en vervreemden, jong en oud,
    elk op hun eigen creatieve manier
    in een heerlijke waas van mirre,
    onder het genot van zoete wijnen,
    mede, water uit de bron, en gersten bier

    Toen het feest was afgelopen
    rond drie uur, midden in de nacht
    nam iedereen afscheid van elkaar
    begroet door de glimlach
    van de helder volle maan

    Het was vredig stil in de stad
    toen de zon aan de horizon verrees
    om licht en warmte te schenken
    aan al dat bloeit en leeft op aard

    Een muze ontwaakte in haar
    met rozen en Lelietjes van dalen
    versierde bloemenbed

    De minstreel speelde met zijn luit
    een vrolijke ode aan de muze
    aan het leven en de vrijheid

    Een zwerver ontwaakte bij de grachten
    waar hij een krentenbrood aan de eendjes voerde
    De mensen begroeten hem vriendelijk
    en schonken hem wat kleingeld en zoete koek

    Een prachtig versierde feestboot kwam voorbij gevaren
    met daarop een dansend gezelschap in alle kleuren en maten
    De zwerver wuifde en zij wuifden terug met zijn allen
    delende het geluk in die ene mooie taal van harten

    Bij het monument voor de vrede
    op het grote plein
    kwamen de mensen
    uit een veelheid aan landen en culturen bijeen
    om te feesten en te genieten
    van het gezellig samenzijn

    Plotseling kletterde daar een gouden koets,
    vol praal en pracht, getrokken door bezweette paarden
    over de keien van de rijk versierde straten.

    De mensen konden er alleen maar om lachen
    toen een koning in oranje papier gewikkelde snoepjes
    begon rond te strooien, om aan te tonen
    hoe rijk, goed en gul hij wel niet was

    En de muzen zongen en dansten bijeen
    op het ritme van de harten van elkeen
    en de engelen koren zongen prachtige liederen
    uit het decor van het hemels blauwe schoon

    Zeven dagen later hoorden de muzen
    dat Daniel was vertrokken uit de stad

    Ze vroegen iedereen uit de kring
    of zij wisten waar hij was

    maar geen een had hem sinds de week ervoor
    gezien of nog iets van hem gehoord

    De laatste die hem had gezien
    kon slechts getuigen
    dat Daniel hem vriendelijk had gevraagd
    om hem alleen te laten, om te dromen
    in de grot van kleur en lichten

    "een paljas met een kromme hoed,
    had hem een of ander toverdrankje gegeven
    en hem gezegd dat door dat te nemen,
    al zijn wensen in vervulling zouden gaan
    in een eindeloos mooie droom"

    De minstreel wist het ook niet en zei:

    "ik weet niet waar hij is,
    de laatste keer dat ik hem gezien heb
    zei die zo lief en lyrisch tegen mij
    "wees lekker jezelf, wees vrij, leef en laat zijn,
    zo hoor je er net als ik, gewoon lekker bij"

    Volgens de zwerver uit het park
    zou Daniel door mensen met knuppels
    in elkaar zijn geslagen
    bij een demonstratie op het het malieveld
    waarop hij bang was weggevlucht

    De gemeenschap die Daniel had verstoten
    verklaarde dat Daniel uit onvrede was weggelopen
    Ze wilden er verder ook niets van weten
    omdat ze het druk hadden met collecteren

    Daniel
    tot eenieders verdriet
    onaangekondigd zo onverwacht
    was op reis gegaan naar het een ver land
    nog verder weg dan de zon de sterren en de maan

    De Muzen waakten nu bij de grot
    waar in een krans van zoete bloemen
    lichten straalden in bittere tranen
    een wordend met de weidse zee

    Waarom, is hij gegaan
    waarheen is hij gegaan?

    Onze lieve Daniel,
    en waar was jij?
    vroeg de muze

    de laatste getuige, was de eerste,
    aan wie zij het vroeg

    hij sprak geen woord

    na de stilte die volgde

    zei een stem:

    "hij is voor altijd gaan dromen"

    toen zongen de engelen uit de hemel

    "weest getroost, in de hemel wolken zal
    hij voor alle tijden gelukkig zijn"

    getuigend van het mysterie

    van het Hemelse Rijk

    He had no palace

    He had no kingdom

    He did not sit on a throne

    He wore no golden crown

    He bore no costly titles

    as a sign of exaltation


    Daniel was a star among the stars
    who shared his light with humankind and earth

    He was a flower in a forest of trees
    an orchid in a garden of clovers and roses

    For Daniel, every person was a pearl,
    a treasure unique and of equal worth

    But his people cast him out
    in the name of a faith
    because he wore women’s garments
    and colored his hair
    in the colors of the rainbow

    You must do this, you must do that,
    you must behave,
    you must listen,
    you must obey,
    you must believe,

    and if you don’t,
    then you’re worth nothing to us,
    then we don’t want to see you anymore,
    then you can just drop dead on your face,
    then you can figure it out for yourself

    That poor, dear Daniel,
    so good and kind he was,
    was cast out
    because he believed in himself

    Daniel found refuge
    in the cave of outcast souls,
    where he was embraced as one
    to share love and sorrow together lovingly

    There the muses sang and danced,
    the rich and the poor, the lonely,
    the wanderers and the alienated, young and old,
    each in their own creative way,
    in a delightful haze of myrrh,
    enjoying sweet wines,
    mead, water from the spring, and barley beer

    When the feast was over
    around three o’clock, in the middle of the night,
    everyone took leave of one another,
    greeted by the smile
    of the bright full moon

    It was peacefully quiet in the city
    when the sun rose on the horizon
    to bestow light and warmth
    on all that blooms and lives on earth

    A muse awoke in her
    flowerbed adorned with roses and lilies of the valley

    The minstrel played with his lute
    a joyful ode to the muse,
    to life and freedom

    A vagabond awoke by the canals
    where he fed the ducklings some currant bread
    The people greeted him kindly
    and gave him some small change and sweet cookies

    A beautifully decorated boat came sailing by
    with a dancing company of all colors and sizes
    The vagabond waved, and they waved back, feasting together,
    sharing happiness in that one beautiful language of hearts

    At the peace monument on the grand square
    people from a multitude of lands and cultures gathered
    to celebrate and enjoy the cozy togetherness

    Suddenly a golden coach clattered by,
    full of splendor and grandeur, pulled by sweating horses
    over the richly adorned cobblestone streets

    The people could only laugh
    when a king began tossing out candies wrapped in orange paper,
    to show how rich, good, and generous he was

    And the muses sang and danced together
    to the rhythm of everyone’s hearts,
    and the angelic choirs sang beautiful songs
    against the backdrop of heavenly blue beauty

    Seven days later, the muses heard
    that Daniel had left the city

    They asked everyone in the circle
    if they knew where he was,

    but no one had seen or heard from him
    since the week before

    The last one who had seen him
    could only testify
    that Daniel had kindly asked
    to be left alone, to dream
    in the cave of color and lights

    "a pilgrim with a crooked hat
    had given him some kind of magic potion
    and told him that by taking it,
    all his wishes would come true
    in an endlessly beautiful dream"

    The minstrel didn’t know either and said:

    "I don’t know where he is,
    the last time I saw him
    he reassuringly told me,
    ‘be yourself, be free, live and let be,
    that’s how you, just like me, fit in perfectly’"

    According to the vagabond from the park,
    Daniel had been beaten up by people with clubs
    at a demonstration on the Malieveld,
    after which he had fled in fear

    The community that had cast Daniel out
    declared that Daniel had run away out of discontent
    They didn’t want to know anything more about it
    because they were busy collecting donations

    Daniel,
    to everyone’s sorrow,
    unannounced and so unexpectedly,
    had set off on a journey to a distant land,
    even further away than the sun, the stars, and the moon

    The muses now kept watch by the cave
    where, in a wreath of sweet flowers,
    lights shone through bitter tears,
    merging with the vast sea

    Why did he go?
    Where did he go?

    Our Daniel,
    and where were you?
    the muse asked

    The last witness was the first
    she asked,
    he spoke no word

    After the silence that followed,
    a voice said:
    "he has gone to dream forever"

    Then the angels from heaven sang:
    "be comforted, in the heavenly clouds he will
    be happy for all eternity,"
    bearing witness to the mystery
    of the Heavenly Kingdom
