Hun delicatessenwinkel, al sinds 2000 een begrip in de buurt, draait om vroeg opstaan en aanpakken. Om 6 uur zijn ze al in de weer: broodjes afbakken, jus persen en de winkel gezellig maken voor de dag. “Hier is het altijd een werkhuis, altijd schoonmaken, altijd opruimen.” Maar ze zouden het niet anders willen. Zodra de eerste klanten binnenkomen en de geur van vers brood de straat langzaam vult, weten ze weer waarom ze het doen. Een nieuwe dag in de Jordaan kan beginnen. Kort daarna druppelen de eerste personeelsleden binnen. De koffiemachine draait op volle toeren om de vaste ‘koffieploeg’ (vaste klanten uit de buurt) te voorzien van hun eerste kopje van de dag. De eerste broodjes gaan over de toonbank, en de Willemstraat komt langzaam tot leven. Jan-Willem en Ongkie werken al 28 jaar samen. Ze begonnen met een kaaswinkel in Watergraafsmeer, wat ze hartstikke leuk vonden, maar toch misten ze een beetje uitdaging. Toen kwam dit pand op hun pad, toen Louman Comestibles, wat hier voorheen zat, kon worden overgenomen. Na zo’n 1,5 jaar in de zaak te werken, hadden verbouwing, Jan-Willem en Ongkie naar eigen zeggen ‘hun eigen smoel aan de winkel gegeven’, en veranderden ze de naam in JWO Delicatessen. Wat ze precies verkopen? Alles wat ze zelf lekker vinden: van wijn tot versgeperst sap (Ongkie studeerde ooit diëtiek), broodjes tot aan zelf geïmporteerde Italiaanse delicatessen, en nog veel meer. En dat werkt. Van ‘s ochtends vroeg tot einde middag lopen hier klanten de winkel in en uit om een broodje of iets lekkers voor bij de borrel te halen. Maar voordat de winkel een succes werd, moesten de twee zich wel echt even bewijzen, vertelt Jan-Willem. Ze kwamen niet uit de Jordaan, zijn een mannelijk stel en – zoals je ziet – niet op hun mondje gevallen.
